Well I have had an artist block, a struggle and a battle. The body of work I was working on I started not to like because they were looking too much like landscapes and too commercial and that’s what I am NOT about. The good thing that has come out of it is that I made a collection of paintings that ALL fit together well as a group.

So now Im going back to hibernate, which is what I was meant to be doing at the start of Oct. I think I felt a pressure to make money and lost a little of my passion. I need to go back to my roots and play with paint and other mediums, to get back where I started couple years ago. I think as artists we go through battles of making a living and its easy to produce work you know will sell but it isn’t always about that. You have to paint what YOU want to create without thinking who will buy it in the end.

I sat in the studio and just played with paint on to paper and came up with some sketches I liked and some that I hated…always the case. Its been a good process and Ive found myself again and want to develop this further before going back to canvas. So Im going to go into hibernation and paint and play and push myself on to make a good body of work that I can be proud of again.

Im off to see my friend Amanda today to plan a group show in Easter in St Ives. She’s an amazing artist who creates abstract paintings that sits really well next to my work. Think it will be an exciting show in a great venue. It will be the first time that I’ll be showing my work in St Ives, so I’m looking forward to it.

I have been gathering photographs that I like that I’ve taken to get ready to frame. Photography is going to be apart of my project that Im working. I really enjoy it so Im using my hobbie and reference to show with my exhibition this time.

I am still hunting around for a venue in Falmouth for a solo show, I would like to do a show before Xmas, or in March so Im busy contacting people now.

Here are some of the photographs framed…I love the yellow door with the paint cracking away fro the wood.

My clay sculptures are taking form now. I have made 5 so far and they are all done and painted. I want to make some more as well soon to complete my mini crowd of Falmouth people.

Graphic Designer

Fisherman

Pastie Woman

Falmouth Art Students

I’ve done a drawing/painting of my dog Rodney on a piece of wood that he found on the beach the other morning.

I am currently working on a new body of work with the inspiration coming from ‘Falmouth’. I am planning a solo show with the dates, place to be announced soon. This is going to be a very different exhibition of my work showing not only paintings but, sketches, photography and 3D sculptures on all the them or Falmouth.

My statement for this work:

Falmouth

This body of work is inspired by an emotional response to Falmouth near to where I live in Cornwall. In particular to the colour that surrounds me within the landscape. I am striving to capture the essence as well as the appearance of the landscape, which provides a constant source of inspiration.

I set out to make abstract compositions out of things I have seen, and been moved by. In the studio, I reassemble my memories of the landscape in paint, painting intuitively with gestural brush strokes. The meaning of the work emerges from the language of paint, which is allowed to be it self before it is a description of something. I also produce sketches and photographs to evoke the memory as well as modeling 3D sculptures.

This body of work is totally abstract compositions evoking a sense of place. Colour and light play the most important parts in this work. Colour is used to evoke emotion; light is used to create space, creating a sense of mystery. Each painting is a journey, dictated by primarily by my current thoughts and emotions of a memory of Falmouth.

Here is a small selection of the work so far.

All the above are oil paintings onto MDF 30 x 30 cm panels.

Oil painting 60 60 inches.

The modeling of the characters is going well, they are out to dry at the moment getting ready to be painted. I want to create the ‘characters’ that I see in Falmouth, the spirit of the town. They are all different sizes ranging from a graphic designer, a student, an artist, a fisherman and a pastie woman…as well as many more to follow.

I love designer toys that are made out of vinyl and we have a large collection ourselves at home, so I am inspired by these and this gave me the idea to create some 3D people of my own.

I have been busy working in my studio this week, working on a new body of work for a solo show that I am planning.

It’s going to be a real different exhibition for me showing a mixture of things. I am hoping to show paintings, sketches, photography and 3D sculptures all on one them.

This is my work so far, a painting on a square box frame canvas and 5 MDF 30 x 30cm pieces.

I have started making some people out of clay, this is my first go and I’m liking him :) . I want to create a crowd of about 20/30 all different sizes and then to paint them all.

This is my Fisherman…

It’s been a good creative week and I am exciting about this body of work.
